Course Description

1-session Online Course

Copyeditors do not know everything, but they do know where to look for information. After a brief orientation by an Emerson reference librarian, participants will do their own research on a contemporary usage controversy using the resources that copyeditors depend on, including dictionaries, usage books, and discipline-focused style guides, both on the shelves and in the library database. Afterward, participants will present their findings to the class.

Course Format

This course is delivered 100% online in a Synchronous learning format. You should reserve the meeting days and times listed for live class meetings via Zoom, but there will also be work to complete on your own outside of these hours. Synchronous courses utilize Zoom for live sessions and a learning platform called Canvas for course materials and assignments. Students are responsible for logging into Canvas, attending scheduled Zoom sessions, managing their time and completing the course requirements by the scheduled due dates. The course syllabus, materials, and zoom links will be provided to enrolled students via Canvas, or email from your instructor to your Emerson email account no later than the first date of your course.

Students participating in Professional Studies non-credit courses must possess a minimum of a High School diploma and must be an adult age 18 or older. Non-credit courses are taken primarily by professionals seeking to develop new skills, broaden their expertise, and build a knowledge base for their professional or personal goals.   • The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law, latest edition; available in a digital edition at apstylebook.com/online and digitally through the Emerson College Iwasaki Library 
  • Copyediting Workbook, available to enrolled students via Canvas, Emerson’s online learning system. The complete workbook is posted for certificate students and individual chapters are posted with each course module. Please note: Printing the workbook is strongly recommended as we use exercises in every class. If you are visiting campus, you can bring or send the pdf to the Emerson Copy Center if you wish to purchase a printed, bound version.
